Koala Feed Tree Plantations

Koala Feed Tree Plantations

At the Symbio Conservation Foundation, we are taking meaningful steps to protect Australia’s iconic koalas by restoring natural habitats and ensuring long-term food security for conservation breeding programs. In collaboration with leading partners, we’ve established extensive koala feed tree plantations across critical areas including all BlueScope sites, ANSTO, Veolia, Benedicts, Wollongong Coal, and as part of the Greener Cities initiative in partnership with Wollongong Council at Koonawarra in the Illawarra. These targeted plantings are not only revitalising ecosystems—they are laying the groundwork for a future where koalas and native wildlife can thrive.

It takes around 1,000 trees to sustainably support just one koala, making habitat restoration a vital part of koala conservation. Our goal is to grow and maintain over 20,000 mature feed trees, which can be sustainably harvested to nourish the koalas in our care and in the wild. These carefully selected eucalypts serve as a critical, long-term food source, especially as koalas face increasing threats from habitat destruction, urban development, and climate change.

This isn’t just about planting trees—it’s about rebuilding resilient ecosystems that support a wide range of native species. By creating a self-sustaining, biodiverse environment, we’re safeguarding the future of wildlife in Southern Sydney, the Illawarra, and beyond. In times of bushfires or natural disasters, these plantations also serve as vital emergency food reserves for displaced or injured animals.

Every tree you purchase helps us restore critical koala habitat and support the survival of this endangered species.
