Sustainability at Symbio

‘A sustainable future for generations of all species’

At Symbio Wildlife Park, we are deeply committed to environmental sustainability and the crucial ecological balance that needs to be preserved. Each day, we strive to educate our visitors on the challenges facing endangered species, many of which are caused by habitat loss due to environmental degradation.

Our Sustainability Vision Statement
A sustainable future for generations of all species

This vision was crafted collaboratively by our entire team at Symbio, reflecting our shared dedication to balancing the needs of the environment, wildlife, and humans. It highlights Symbio's critical role in wildlife conservation, environmental sustainability, and education.

Awards and Recognition:

  • Large Scale Development of the Year – Zoo and Aquarium Association, for the Reptile Experience. This award highlights the success of our sustainable building strategies, with a facility that incorporates thermally effective products, 60 solar panels, and a water collection system.
  • Excellence in Sustainability – IMB Business Awards 2016, for our overall achievements in sustainability practices across the entire organisation.

Key Accomplishments:

  1. Waste Diversion
Over the last 12 months, Symbio has successfully diverted 98% of organic waste from landfill. All garden and animal waste is processed on-site in a 4-bay composting system, reducing material by 60%. The processed organic matter is then reused in new animal habitats, such as the Ring-Tailed Lemur and Cheetah habitats, as well as our extensive gardens.

  2. Electricity Efficiency
Through our electrical efficiency strategies, we have achieved a reduction in electricity consumption per visitor to 2.154 kW/h, resulting in a total saving of 21,054 kW/h annually.

  3. Water Conservation
By enhancing our rainwater storage capacity, activating more roof collection space, and extending our rainwater plumbing network, we have significantly reduced our total water consumption by 707 kilolitres, despite a 25% increase in visitation and the completion of major projects.

  4. Recycling and Waste Reduction
With the introduction of a commingled recycling service, we have reduced our waste services from 27 to 24, further emphasizing the effectiveness of our waste management strategies.

  5. Water Quality Improvement
We’ve implemented leading biological filtration systems that have successfully reduced ammonia levels by 95%, ensuring cleaner, healthier environments for our animals.

  6. Sustainable Procurement
Our supply chain management policies focus on sourcing eco-friendly packaging, reducing plastic use, and ensuring that products sold in our retail areas use certified sustainable or palm oil-free ingredients.

At Symbio, sustainability is not just a goal—it is an integral part of who we are, guiding our efforts to protect wildlife, conserve resources, and provide education to future generations.
